Currently, Kilauea is one-way from Ponahawai to Keawe (A), and from Keawe to Mamo (B). Traffic engineers might consider changing Kilauea to be two-way from Ponahawai to Keawe (A), while remaining one-way from Keawe to Mamo (B), but for that short portion (about 300 feet), the one-way direction should be changed to the opposite direction of that which it is now.
Something is intuitively wrong with the current situation, which is evident when we repeatedly observe vehicles backing out of Kilauea to get back onto Mamo because they entered Kilauea from the wrong direction. With the proposed changes, there will no longer be an opportunity to enter Kilauea from the wrong direction, and overall traffic flow in and out of downtown Hilo will be improved, not only for automobiles, but for cyclists as well.
