League of American Bicyclists - Reform Group
http://www.labreform.org/
Since 1880, the League of American Bicyclists
defended the rights and interests of lawful,
competent cyclists. Until the mid-90's, LAB
offered many useful member services, usually
through low-cost programs run by volunteers.
During the last few years, as a faction seized
control of the Board, LAB abandoned its role of
protecting members' interests and it dropped most
of the services to become just another Washington
lobbying and fundraising group.

Technical issues with sidewalks and sidepaths
http://www.bikexprt.com/bikepol/facil/sidepath/issues.htm
Research demonstrates sidepaths have a higher rateof bicycle-motor vehicle collisions than streets. This may seem surprising, however, theoverwhelming majority of car-bicycle collisions -approximately 90% - involve turning and crossingmovements. Sidepaths complicate these movements byplacing the bicyclist and motorist out of sight ofeach other and on conflicting paths at junctionswith streets and with driveways.
Bicycle Parking in Commercial Areas
http://www.humantransport.org/bicycledriving/library/parking/parkingcommercial.htm
Bicycle parking in commercial areas is used mostlyby shoppers for brief durations of time, but alsoby business employees for longer durations.Security is very important to both types of users, but convenience is a priority to short-termshoppers while shelter from precipitation is apriority to long-term users. General guidelinesfor bicycle parking design in commercial areas arehere.

The Bicycle Compatibility Index
http://www.hsrc.unc.edu/research/pedbike/98072/techrep/techrep.html
Presently, there is no methodology widely
accepted by engineers, planners, or bicycle
coordinators that will allow them to determine how
compatible a roadway is for allowing efficient
operation of both bicycles and motor vehicles.
Determining how existing traffic operations and
geometric conditions impact a bicyclist’s decision
to use or not use a specific roadway is the first
step in determining the bicycle compatibility of
the roadway. This research effort was undertaken
to develop a methodology for deriving a bicycle
compatibility index (BCI) that could be used by
practitioners to evaluate the capability of
specific roadways to accommodate both motorists
and bicyclists.
Designing Bike Lanes

Self-Sufficiency And Sustainability
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~mspp/sustainability.htm
Life on small, isolated islands in a large expanse
of ocean can be precarious. That people and
cultures evolved over generations on these islands
is testament to the ability of early settlers to
make decisions which ensured their survival. These
decisions, based on an appraisal of what was
available to use, and how it could be maintained
through time, constitute an early form of
sustainable living (Clarke 1990). In prehistoric
times, there were few or no opportunities to
supplement the local resource base with outside
supplies , and self-sufficiency was the rule.
